True broccoli also called Broccoli Calabrese (Broccoli brassica oleracea italica) are seeds from the real broccoli plant that you also find in the supermarket, the sprouts from Broccoli calabrese have a very high content of active antioxidants, including glucosinnolates / Sulforaphane, as well as a high content of vitamin C and several of B-the vitamins.

The cheaper version is called Broccoli yells or Brassica rapa cymosa, and they are more closely related to Turnips, Kale, Mustard and Bok choy, these varieties contain very little of the active antioxidant glucoraphanin/sulforaphane/glucosinnolates.

Origin

Broccoli Calabrese, also known as Italian broccoli, has its origins in the Calabria region of southern Italy, from which it gets its name. This type of broccoli is actually the most common type consumed and grown worldwide today.

Broccoli has been cultivated in Italy since the Roman period and has been a part of the Italian diet for centuries. From Italy, broccoli spread to other parts of Europe and to North America in the 20th century. Today, broccoli is grown and eaten in many different forms, including as a microgreen, all over the world.
