Grow your own microgreens

Growing beetroot microgreens is a simple and fun process. Here is a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare your seeds: Start with organic beetroot seeds. Soak the seeds in water for 8-12 hours, then let them dry on a paper towel.
  2. Prepare your soil: Beetroot microgreens thrive best in a well-drained soil coconut soil. Fill one sprout hill or another low, flat container with approx. 1 cm coconut flour.
  3. Sow your seeds: Spread the softened seeds evenly over the soil. Lightly cover them with an additional layer of soil, or put another tray on top for them to sprout
  4. Water regularly: Beetroot microgreens must be kept moist, but not wet. Water your seeds once or twice a day, depending on the climate.
  5. Wait for growth: After a few days, you should start seeing little red shoots appear.
  6. Harvest your microgreens: When your microgreens are around 5-7 cm high – typically after 10-14 days – they are ready to be harvested. Use sharp scissors to cut them just above the surface of the soil.

Origin

Beetroot, known scientifically as Beta vulgaris, is a plant native to the regions along the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed that they were cultivated by both the ancient Greeks and Romans. Originally, only the leaves of the plant were eaten, but over time people began to eat the root as well. The plant has been cultivated for thousands of years and is valued for its nutritious root and its leaves. Today, they are grown all over the world and used in a variety of culinary uses, including as microgreens.
