Taste and Use
Wheatgrass has a green, earthy flavour that can be slightly bitter. It is often described as a concentrated version of the flavour of green vegetables or spinach. Organic wheatgrass is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, which many perceive as a cleaner and more natural taste.
Wheatgrass is very versatile. The most common use is as an ingredient in juices or smoothies. It can easily be added to a blender with fruit, vegetables and some liquid to create a nutritious drink. The strong flavour can be masked by the other ingredients.
Additionally, wheatgrass can be dried and powdered to make a food supplement that can be added to foods or drinks. Fresh wheatgrass can also be used in salads or as a garnish to add colour and nutrition to a variety of dishes.
Grow Your Own Wheatgrass
Growing wheatgrass is a simple and rewarding process. Here is a basic step-by-step guide:
- Prepare your seeds: Start with organic wheatgrass seeds. Soak them in water for about 8-12 hours. Drain the water and let the seeds rest and germinate for another 24 hours.
- Prepare your soil: Wheat thrives best in well-drained soil. Fill a germination tray or flat container with 1-2 cm of coco peat. Feel free to add liquid fertiliser for higher yields.
- Sow Your Seeds: Spread the germinated seeds evenly over the soil. Do not cover them with soil as this can prevent proper germination.
- Water regularly: Keep the seeds moist, but not too wet. Water once or twice a day, depending on the climate.
- Wait for Growth: After a few days you will start to see small green shoots. Continue to water regularly.
- Harvest: When the grass is 15-20 cm tall (typically after 7-10 days), it is ready for harvesting. Use sharp scissors to cut the grass just above the soil surface.
- Use or store the Grass: Wheatgrass is best when used fresh, but can be stored in the fridge for a few days. Make sure it is dry before placing it in an airtight container.
Origin
Wheatgrass originates from Western Asia and is derived from the common wheat plant, Triticum aestivum. It has been cultivated and used as food for thousands of years and has been an important part of the diet of many ancient civilisations, including the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians.
In the 20th century, wheatgrass gained wide recognition as a nutritional supplement in Western cultures, mainly thanks to the research of American chemist Charles Schnabel, who popularised wheatgrass in the 1930s as a health-promoting food.
Today, wheatgrass is grown all over the world, both commercially and by home growers, and is often used in juices, smoothies and supplements due to its high vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content.
