Flavours and applications
Cress is known for its sharp, peppery flavour, which can add a fresh and lively note to a wide range of dishes. It is a versatile ingredient that can be used in many ways:
- Sandwiches and open sandwiches: Perfect for providing a fresh contrast to milder ingredients like eggs or cheese.
- Salads: Sprinkle cress over salads for extra flavour and texture.
- Soups and main courses: Cress can be used as a garnish and flavour enhancer for various dishes.
- Sauces and dressings: Its sharp flavour balances sweetness and acidity in sauces and dressings.
With its intense flavour, you only need a small amount of cress to give dishes an extra boost. Because the seeds are organic, you can be sure that they are free from synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
Cultivation of Cress
It's easy to grow cress indoors all year round. Here's a simple guide on how to get started:
- Find a shallow container with drainage holes in the bottom to avoid overwatering.
- Fill the container with light, well-drained coconut soil and make sure the soil is moist but not wet.
- Sprinkle the cress seeds evenly over the surface of the soil without covering them as they need light to germinate.
- Place the container in a bright place, for example on a windowsill or under a grow light.
- Cress thrives best at temperatures between 15-20 degrees Celsius.
- Keep the soil moist and you will see the seeds germinate within a few days.
- When the cress reaches a height of about 5 cm, you can harvest it by cutting it off at ground level. Harvest after 5-7 days when the leaves are fully developed.
Origin
Cress, or Lepidium sativum, is a fast-growing herb believed to originate from Egypt and Western Asia. It has a long history and has been used for thousands of years due to its distinctive flavour and culinary uses. Today, cress is a popular ingredient in many European cuisines.
