Tomato 'Bajaja' Solanum lycopersicum L. Semi-hardy annual plant that produces round, red fruits that are delicious in salads and as a healthy snack

Description

Dwarf tomato - red mini fruit

The "Bajaja" tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a nice dwarf tomato.

This sweet and juicy Cherry tomato is so prolific that each plant can produce up to 700 small, 8-10g, juicy red fruits. With fruit that size, there will be plenty of delicious tomatoes to snack on, as well as add to salads and other culinary dishes.

The Bajaja tomato plant is a versatile variety, as its size can be controlled by the size of the container it is planted in. This makes it ideal for an early tomato crop in patio containers, and this compact shrub variety does not require regular lateral pruning, making it particularly easy to cultivate. Extremely suitable for growing in pots on a balcony and in an indoor vegetable garden.

Height: 25-35cm

Sowing and growing:

Pre-germination indoors: January to March

For greenhouse cultivation: Sow from February to March.

For outdoor cultivation: Sow from March to April.

Sow seeds on the surface of a good, well-drained, moist seeding mix/coir and cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or coir/vermiculite. Place seed trays under grow lights at a constant temperature of around 15-20C until after germination, which takes approx. 7-14 days. When seedlings develop 2 true leaves, repot into individual 7.5cm (3″) pots of compost and continue growing at a minimum temperature of 15C.

When the tomato plants have grown well, they are repotted in larger pots or containers. Once all risk of frost has passed, they are gradually acclimatized to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before the pots are placed outdoors in a sheltered position in full sun, suitable for balconies and patios.

Water tomato plants often to keep the compost evenly moist. Fertilize the tomatoes regularly with a good liquid fertilizer that has a high potassium content when the first truss of fruit is formed. Dwarf shrub varieties do not require pruning of side shoots or top shoots. Tomatoes can be harvested when they ripen from July to September.

Companion plants:

Try growing the tomatoes with French marigolds to deter whiteflies, and along with basil, chives or mint to deter aphids and other pests.
