Description
Sweet pea seeds – Organic plant seeds
European produced 100% organic sweet green peas for sprouting as pea shoots.
Pea shoots are the young sprouts from pea plants. They are often grown as microgreens, meaning they are harvested when they are very young, typically just one to two weeks old. Pea shoots are known for their crunchy texture and sweet, nutty flavor reminiscent of ripe peas. They are extremely nutritious, rich in vitamins and minerals, and also contain a good amount of protein.
Taste and application possibilities
Organic sweet pea shoots, grown as microgreens, offer a fresh, sweet and slightly nutty flavor that is incredibly inviting. The flavor is milder than full-grown peas, making them a great addition to many dishes. These microgreens are versatile and can be used in many ways. Their delicate, sweet flavor and crunchy texture make them a great addition to salads, where they add a nice color and a breath of fresh air. Pea shoots can also be used as a delicious topping on sandwiches, in wraps or even as a garnish on hot dishes. Their deep green color and the visual appeal they add to any dish is just a bonus to their delicious taste.
In addition, pea shoots can be blended into smoothies or juices to add a healthy and nutritious component. High in vitamins and minerals, they are a great way to add extra nutrition to your diet. And so kids love these sweet green shoots as a healthy snack straight from the box the sprouting tray.
Grow your own pea shoots
Growing pea shoots is a simple and quick process. Follow these steps to grow your own healthy pea shoots:
- Choose a suitable container to grow your pea shoots in, for example a low sprouting tray with drainage holes in the bottom and a tray.
- Fill the container with coconut flour.
- Soak your pea seeds in water for about 8-12 hours to soften them and speed up germination.
- Spread the pre-soaked pea seeds evenly over the surface of the soil, making sure they do not overlap.
- Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.
- Water the soil gently so that it is moist but not waterlogged.
- Place the tray in a place with moderate light and a stable temperature (around 18-22 degrees Celsius).
- Keep the soil constantly moist by watering lightly, or use a cover.
- After approximately 10-14 days, your pea seeds should have germinated into healthy pea shoots.
- Harvest your pea shoots by cutting them near the soil surface with clean shears.
- When growing as a microgreen, you can harvest several times, as the plant grows back after harvesting, remember to add liquid BIG A+B fertiliser to increase yield.
Origin
Sweet peas, specifically the variety Pisum sativum 'Charmette', have a long and fascinating history that stretches back to the Middle East and Asia. Originally cultivated as shell peas, these plants have become a culinary highlight since the 17th century. 'Charmette' is known for its beauty and abundance of juicy peas, ideal for fresh consumption and canning. This hardy plant thrives in a variety of climates and soil types, requires minimal care, and is therefore an excellent choice for both new and experienced gardeners.
