Description
Plant boxes are smart at getting plants out of the ground. This makes it harder for pests to attack and reduces the risk of plant diseases. They also make gardening easier and your outdoor space more attractive with their structured look.

- Drainage layer: A drainage layer at the bottom of the planter box helps prevent water from collecting at the roots, which can cause root rot. Materials such as pebbles, leca balls or broken terracotta pots are laid in a layer at the bottom of the box. This layer should be between 2.5 to 5 cm high, depending on the size of the planter.
- Filter layer: Above the drainage layer, you can place a filter layer to prevent soil from washing into and clogging the drainage layer. This can be landscape fabric, coffee filters or even a thin layer of newspaper. The filter layer lets the water run through but keeps the soil on top of the drainage layer.
- Quality soil: Fill the rest of the planter box with a high-quality, nutrient-rich potting soil. Choose a soil mix that suits the specific plants you intend to grow. Some plants thrive best in more sandy soil, while others prefer a more clayey or moisture-retentive soil.
- Long-acting fertiliser: Consider mixing long-acting fertiliser into the soil before you plant. This ensures that your plants get the nutrients they need over a longer period of time.
- Mould layer: After planting, you can add a layer of mulch on the surface of the soil. This helps retain moisture, prevents weed growth and adds a nice finishing touch. Mulch can be organic material such as wood chips, bark, compost or even decorative stones.
