Where can I grow chili plants?

Chili plants can be grown anywhere as long as they get the right amount of sun or grow lights, nutrition and heat. The most popular places for growing chili plants are either on the balcony or in a greenhouse. But LED plant lights have made it possible to grow your plants in the basement or in the garage, where no light otherwise penetrates.

Get started with growing chillies

To get off to a good start with the cultivation of chilli plants, the plant must have good conditions from the start. This includes both temperature, humidity and light levels. Temperatures of between 15 and 24 degrees are typically what is seen as the optimal temperature by chili hobbyists.

We recommend that you start with sprout your seeds under a good grow light lamp, that way you ensure good healthy plants, on this page you will find everything from germination trays to grow light. However, it is important to underline that you do not need to illuminate the seeds with grow lights until you see the first green sprout sticking its "head" out of the ground.

Once the plant is off to a good start, you have to decide where it should grow big and hopefully produce a lot of fruit. Either it must be placed under LED grow lights and where it can therefore be placed anywhere from even the darkest basement to the bright living room.

If you do not have LED grow lights, we recommend that you display it in a greenhouse when it has reached a certain size. If you wish, your chilli plant can also do well outdoors, but only when the soil temperature is above 16-18° and your plant has had a good start to the season. But it is more optimal with a greenhouse, as the chili plant has high requirements for temperature and humidity

You can advantageously have your chilli plant in a large pot, so it can easily move from the greenhouse to the open field, and back to the greenhouse again when the temperature drops and the autumn months creep closer. When growing chilli plants outdoors it is therefore important that you keep an eye on the weather forecast. With the right grow light in the greenhouse, you can significantly extend the season.

It is important to be aware that chilli plants are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and weather conditions and therefore require a period of adaptation if they e.g. must be moved from the windowsill to the greenhouse, here it is therefore recommended to put the plant out for a few hours at a time for a few days before the final move.

Grow light for chilli plants

LED grow lights allow you to grow your plants all year round, but there are several different artificial light sources, so why choose LED?

LED grow lights protect your plants, as they generate less heat than sodium lamps and halogen bulbs, among other things. Although we have pointed out several times that heat is important for chili plants, the amount of heat that comes out of a traditional bulb is very harmful to the plant, especially when they are so close to each other. In addition to that, non-LED grow lights also use a lot of power, and the electricity bill will therefore quickly hurt the wallet.

With LED grow lights, your plants have the opportunity to achieve the most optimal growth without getting burnt leaves. In this way, your plants get a healthy and efficient growth! Cultivating chilli plants is therefore not as big a challenge as you might think!

How much light should my chilies have?

It is our recommendation that if you want to grow these plants indoors with artificial light, they should not be placed in a window as the sunlight will dry them out too quickly. Furthermore, if a powerful and good enough light has been chosen, the additional light from the sun will not be necessary. With chili plants, you should always choose a full-spectrum light, as it favors both the plant's growth andg flower arrangement. If a blue or pink light is chosen, the yield at harvest will be significantly lower.

  • Recommended brightness: min. 350 up to 600 μmol/s*m²
  • Max hours of light per day: 18 hours
  • Recommended DLI is: 30-40
  • Recommended lamp for growing plants: QB 100W (40-60 cm height)

LED grow lights are ideal for growing chili plants, as LED grow lights deliver exactly the amount and type of light your plants need. There are many other alternatives that provide broad-spectrum lights, many of which are unnecessary for the plant's growth. This means that they produce a large amount of energy which neither benefits your electricity bill nor the plants.

Financial benefits - with LED grow lights you manage to save up to 90% on power consumption compared to other alternatives such as e.g. fluorescent tubes and incandescent/halogen bulbs. LED grow lights also come with a significantly longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

The long life of one of the advantages that makes it more worthwhile to acquire LED grow lights than other alternatives such as fluorescent tubes, halogen and sodium lamps, etc. Many of these alternatives can be obtained cheaper, but the price for the energy consumption from these lamps quickly exceeds the purchase price from an LED grow light, the cheap plant lights because they have a lot of waste and heat release. It is especially expensive when electricity prices are as high as they are today. LED grow lights therefore ensure that your chili plant gets the most ideal living conditions, but also ensures that you do not suffer a financial loss on products that have a short lifespan and high power consumption.
